Your scarification has been done under clean, professional conditions.
Now it's up to you to take proper care of it. The chances of infection are minimal with the proper aftercare regimen. We have found that most problems/irritations occur when:
     · Not cleaning a piece correctly.
     · Using improper cleaning agents or irritants.
     · Over-agitating or improper agitation of a piece.
The amount of scarring depends greatly on how you care for the piece. If you clean the piece regularly without irritating the area the results may be less than if you were to agitate the piece. Below are some different methods for care and agitation.

YOUR RESULTS WILL VARY GREATLY ON HOW YOU CARE FOR YOUR PIECE; NO GUARANTEE IS MADE ABOUT YOUR LEVEL OF SCARRING.

Cleaning of Scarification:

Your piece will be bandaged upon completion. Carefully remove the bandage after four to six hours and wash with cool water and soap, then rinse and pat dry. You will need to clean your piece two or three times daily for the first few weeks to disinfect the area and prevent infection. You can do this easily in the shower by using an antimicrobial soap such as Provon or Satin, or a more readily available antibacterial soap such as Dial. Make sure to keep the area around your piece clean as well and be sure to wash your hands before touching a piece and wear clean clothes through the entire healing process. Avoid soaking in any body of water; pools, hot tubs, oceans, ponds, etc. for the first 2-3 weeks or until the initial healing has finished. Excess bacteria in these bodies of water can easily lead to an infection. Healing time varies greatly depending on scarification type and location. The initial healing time of a scarification piece should take between 10-14 days, while the final scar result may take several weeks or months to fully develop. Once the procedure is completed it is solely your responsibility to clean and, if you choose, to agitate your piece.

Agitation of Scarification:

The amount of scarring in a scarification piece depends largely on how you care for it. Irritating a scarification piece can increase potential for an infection to occur, use caution in choosing to agitate your scarification, and keep your piece very clean. The easiest way to agitate scarification is to simply wrap the piece to prevent a scab from forming, this can be done by coating the piece with a very thin layer of petroleum ointment (vaseline) and then covering it with plastic wrap. Special note: DO NOT use an antibacterial ointment (such as bacitracin or neosporin), or other ointments with excess ingredients such as vitamin A+D ointment.
Since a scab will not be forming there will be a fair amount of moisture under the bandage. This can irritate an open wound or your skin so be sure to clean, dry, and re-wrap your piece throughout the day with this method. Keep the area covered for 7-10 days or as desired. Please consult your scarification artist for suggestions on how to further agitate your individual piece. Reminder: it is crucial to keep your piece clean to prevent infection!
